Comments about this product:
I purchased this because I have been slowly collecting decent replicas of the hand held props seen in Star Trek as well as some other science fiction/action subjects. I hated this "substitute" for the series communicators when I first saw it in "Wrath of Khan" however, acknowledging that the design of movie communicators was "fixed" by the time of the "Search for Spock", I think this is an extremely cool piece of Trekdom, faithfully executed with serious collectors in mind. It helps tell the story of how some of the minor Star Trek production values seemed lost in the times following the 60's - at least after the cartoon of the seventies - apparently at the hands of those who seemed to have no appreciation of what went before. As the quality of the action adventure plots sharply rose after STTMP, so did the secondary matters of the Star Trek genre, like the appearance of phasers, communicators, and tricorders. In my opinion the 60's remain the best, however they did recover in the movies! This prop was the first clear attempt to give us back a "flip open" communicator. It was boxy yes, but it helped retain the "practical" appearance of field equipment not seen in STTMP, providing some continuity with what had been seen before.
